President Akufo-Addo and President-elect John Mahama have agreed to inaugurate a joint transition team on December 11, 2024, as both leaders work together to ensure a smooth transfer of power.
In a statement after the Electoral Commission declared Mahama the winner of the 2024 Presidential Election, Mahama shared that Akufo-Addo had personally congratulated him and extended his best wishes.
The two leaders also discussed the formation of the joint transition team, with Mahama expressing his commitment to collaborating for the nation’s benefit.
“I received a congratulatory call from President Akufo-Addo, who graciously extended his best wishes to me. We also discussed the formation of the joint transition team. I assured him of my readiness to work together for a smooth transition in the best interest of Ghana,” Mahama said in his acceptance speech at his campaign office in Cantonments, Accra.
Mahama’s victory marks a decisive win for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), with the former president securing 6,382,397 votes, or 56.55% of the total valid votes. His main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
Mahama celebrated the outcome, calling it one of the most significant electoral victories in Ghana’s Fourth Republic history. “The people of Ghana have entrusted us with an overwhelming mandate. I am deeply honored and humbled by their support,” he said.
Both leaders are committed to working together for the peaceful and efficient transfer of power.
