Alan Kyerematen, the presidential candidate for the Movement for Change, has expressed his disapproval of former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the upcoming 2024 elections.
In an interview on November 17, Kufuor called on Ghanaians to support Dr. Bawumia, praising him as the best candidate to lead the nation. He emphasized that, given the current global economic situation, Bawumia could significantly improve Ghana’s economy, citing his previous work at the Bank of Ghana under Kufuor’s administration.
Kufuor stated, “I believe that with divine guidance, Bawumia can deliver on this promise, and I encourage you to support his candidacy.”
Kyerematen responded during a conversation with Kwasi Parker-Wilson, criticizing Kufuor’s endorsement as damaging to his legacy as a statesman. He argued that Kufuor’s decision has not only harmed his reputation but also elicited a wave of criticism.
“Kufuor is my uncle and an elder, so I hesitate to speak out against him publicly. However, his actions have created a serious blemish on his political career. The derogatory comments directed at him are concerning,” Kyerematen remarked. “He is a respected figure in Ghana, so it’s puzzling why he would engage in politics like this. His current path is troubling, and he needs to reconsider his actions. He knows what he’s doing.”
Kyerematen, who recently left the NPP to lead his new Movement for Change, is positioning himself as an alternative to both the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His comments reflect the increasing tensions in the political arena as the December 2024 elections approach.
