The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has instructed the Minerals Commission, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other relevant authorities to take immediate action against the illegal sale of mining explosives.
This directive follows a deadly explosion at a shop selling mining explosives in Odumase, near Konongo, which killed three people and left several others injured.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the need to address these illegal activities to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“I have ordered the security agencies, including the BNI, national security, the police, and the CID, to carry out a thorough investigation, particularly in mining communities, to identify any individuals illegally selling explosives in residential areas,” he said.
He further clarified that only licensed operators, with authorization from the EPA and related agencies, are permitted to sell explosives.
“It is unlawful and dangerous for anyone to store and sell explosives in households. This is a regrettable situation, but I assure you that the security agencies are fully committed to investigating the matter, bringing those responsible to justice, and preventing such incidents in the future,” Dr. Amoakohene stated.
