Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has made explosive claims about his relationship with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of using his popularity to secure votes during the 2024 General Election.
Gyan, who was appointed to the NPP’s manifesto committee for Youth and Sports, was expected to help mobilize the youth and drive national development. However, just weeks before the election, he shocked many by stepping down from the position, leaving behind a trail of questions and controversy.
In an emotional Instagram Live broadcast on January 2, 2025, Gyan revealed the sense of betrayal he felt after realizing that the NPP had taken advantage of his public image for political gain.
“I joined the NPP because I believed I could use my brand to benefit the youth and contribute to the country’s development,” Gyan explained. “I had already done a lot with my own resources, but with government support, I thought I could achieve even more.”
However, Gyan soon came to believe that his involvement in the party was less about the future of the youth and more about exploiting his fanbase for electoral advantage. The party, he claims, capitalized on his popularity to sway voters amid the country’s tough economic situation.
“They used my name and popularity to attract voters. I was being used, and it cost me my dignity,” Gyan stated, visibly upset.
The former footballer did not hold back in his criticism, concluding with a powerful statement: “God will not forgive those who were involved in this.”
The video has since gone viral, with many expressing their shock at Gyan’s candid remarks. His public fallout with the NPP raises further questions about his future involvement in Ghanaian politics, especially given his previous endorsement of the party.
