Accra, January 22, 2025 — Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Member of Parliament for Bantama, has strongly condemned the recent surge of post-election violence in Ghana, urging immediate and decisive action from the government to ensure accountability and restore order.

In a statement delivered in Parliament on January 22, 2025, Hon. Asenso-Boakye denounced the acts of violence, vandalism, and unlawful takeovers of public institutions following the December 7, 2024 general election. He expressed concern that these actions threaten Ghana’s hard-won democratic reputation and stability.

“Ghana has long been a beacon of democracy in Africa, but the recent violence endangers our democratic legacy,” said Asenso-Boakye, emphasizing that such acts of arson and assault could undermine the country’s peace and socio-economic development.

Highlighting Specific Incidents

The MP recounted disturbing instances of politically motivated disturbances. He noted incidents such as the alleged arson at the Electoral Commission office in Ayensuano, the unlawful invasion of public institutions like the Ghana National Gas Company and Bui Power Authority, and the forcible removal of public servants. He also cited attacks in his own constituency, Bantama, where public institutions were stormed, staff were ejected, and assets were threatened.

Additionally, he mentioned the tragic events at AngloGold Ashanti Mines in Obuasi, where armed intruders clashed with security forces, resulting in the destruction of private property and loss of life.

“These actions are unacceptable and must be condemned, no matter the political affiliation of those involved,” he asserted.

Call for Leadership and Accountability

Asenso-Boakye expressed his frustration with the lack of decisive action against the perpetrators, which he said erodes public trust in the rule of law and governance institutions. He urged the government to ensure that all those responsible for the violence face the full force of the law, regardless of their political ties.

“Leadership requires more than words; it requires decisive action,” he declared.

Proposed Legislative and Collaborative Solutions

To prevent further violence, Asenso-Boakye suggested reviewing Ghana’s legislative framework to impose stricter penalties on individuals and entities involved in unlawful activities. He also called for greater collaboration among security agencies, civil society, traditional authorities, and political leaders to ensure the country remains committed to peace, unity, and good governance.

Appeal to the Youth

The MP also issued a powerful message to the youth of Ghana, urging them not to become pawns in political violence. “You are the future of this country. Do not allow yourselves to be used for destruction. Think of your dreams, your goals, and the future you want to build,” he appealed.

Upholding Ghana’s Democratic Legacy

Concluding his statement, Asenso-Boakye reaffirmed the need to protect Ghana’s democratic integrity. “We cannot allow the actions of a few to tarnish our reputation as a model of democracy in Africa. It is time for us to act decisively to restore order and ensure that Ghana remains a shining example of good governance.”
