The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a notorious armed robbery suspect who had been on the run for nearly nine years.

The suspect, 32-year-old Michael Owusu Ansah, widely known by the alias Baby Last, was wanted in connection with a deadly robbery in 2016 that resulted in the killing of Police Officer G/Cpl Frank Essel of the SWAT Unit. The attack occurred at the Open Space Hotel in Denchemuoso on May 19, 2016.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, May 14, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Godwin Ahianyo, confirmed that Baby Last was apprehended on April 22, 2025, during a targeted operation by police intelligence units. He was arrested alongside four accomplices.

During interrogation, Ansah reportedly admitted to being involved in multiple street and home robberies in areas including Denchemuoso, Atwima-Techiman, Asuoyeboah, and surrounding communities.

All five suspects appeared before the Atasomanso Circuit Court on May 13, 2025. They were remanded into custody and are expected to reappear in court on June 4, 2025.

In a related operation on Thursday, May 8, 2025, police arrested three young men—Umar Issah (26), Sherif Mohammed (20), and Abdul Jalelu (19)—following a violent robbery in the Kenyasi area. The suspects, riding separate motorbikes, allegedly attacked two residents and stole their mobile phones before attempting to flee.

A police pursuit ensued, during which Sherif Mohammed sustained a gunshot wound to the ribs, while the others sustained various injuries. All three are currently under police guard while receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

DSP Ahianyo reaffirmed the police’s commitment to cracking down on violent crime in the region and ensuring the safety of all residents.

Baby Last has been on our wanted list since 2016, during the tenure of Commissioner (Rtd.) Kofi Boakye,” DSP Ahianyo said. “We are pleased to inform the public that he is finally in custody and will face justice for his alleged crimes.”
