Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has expressed strong confidence that the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill will be passed into law this year.

Addressing the Ghanaian community in Côte d’Ivoire on January 21, 2025, Bagbin criticized former President Akufo-Addo for not assenting to the bill, calling the move unconstitutional.

“The LGBTQ+ bill was passed by Parliament, but the former president refused to assent to it, which was unconstitutional. There is no law that allows the president to refuse or delay assent to a bill passed by Parliament,” Bagbin stated. “Parliament is the legitimate body for passing laws, not anyone else—not even the president. That decision was wrong, and the people made their voices heard on it.”

He went on to announce his plan to reach out to the new Attorney General and Minister for Justice for their comments before resubmitting the bill to the new president for assent. Bagbin emphasized the bill’s urgency and significance, stressing its importance to the country’s values.

“I will be writing to the new Attorney General and Minister for Justice to seek their views so we can quickly resend it to the president for assent. This will not take long—it will be passed this year. It is anti-God, and no one should take this lightly. I am prepared to fight for this cause, even at great personal risk,” he added.
