Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to achieving lasting peace in the Bawku area, following a resurgence of violent clashes in the constituency.

In a press statement released on Friday, April 11, the MP, who is currently on official duties abroad, expressed deep condolences to families who lost loved ones and extended sympathies to those injured in the recent unrest — an incident which also included an attempt to set his private residence in Bawku ablaze.

Mr. Ayariga acknowledged the growing frustration among the youth regarding the slow progress in resolving the long-standing conflict, as well as concerns over the alleged misconduct of certain members of the security forces.

“I understand the anger and frustration of the youth about the pace of the resolution, and the misconduct of some misguided law enforcement officers,” he noted.

Reaffirming the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s dedication to justice and peace, Mr. Ayariga urged all sides to support the peace efforts being spearheaded by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

He emphasized the critical role of traditional leaders, including the Overlord of Kusaug, Zugran Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and the Overlord of Mamprugu, Nayiri Naa Bɔhagu Mahami Sheriga, both of whom he said are deeply committed to the peace process.

Calling for unity among his constituents, Ayariga encouraged all to stand behind these collaborative efforts for the sake of long-term stability.

Addressing what he described as a “smear campaign” circulating on social media, Mr. Ayariga dismissed allegations aimed at discrediting him during the crisis.

“Kindly disregard the lies being told about me by political detractors… The smear campaign on social media will not distract me,” he stated.

He concluded by reaffirming his determination to see the conflict resolved within the framework of Ghana’s legal and judicial systems.
