The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have ramped up security operations in Bawku and surrounding areas following renewed gunfire and unrest, including an incident near Binduri Central Market on Easter Monday.

In a statement released on Monday and signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, the GAF confirmed that troops conducted a cordon-and-search operation in Binduri in response to reports of sporadic gunshots in the early hours of the day.

A joint team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, with support from the Ghana Police Service, swiftly secured the area and conducted a thorough search.

“One suspected gunman was arrested and handed over to the Police,” the statement said.

Weapons and equipment retrieved during the operation included:

  • One AK-47 rifle
  • One G3 rifle
  • An empty M16 magazine
  • 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition
  • 128 rounds of G3 ammunition
  • A machete
  • Four fragmentation jackets
  • One pair of boots
  • One helmet

Later that day, military patrols intercepted unidentified armed individuals attempting to enter Binduri, triggering a brief exchange of gunfire. The suspects fled the scene.

The GAF stated that calm has since been restored, but troops remain on high alert to prevent further disturbances. The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to working alongside other security agencies to support peace efforts in Bawku and its environs.

Authorities are urging residents to cooperate with ongoing security measures aimed at restoring lasting peace to the area.
