Amnesty International reported on Tuesday that Boko Haram militants carried out a horrific attack on Mafa village in northwestern Nigeria’s Yobe state, resulting in the deaths of at least 127 people.
The assault took place on Sunday, and victims were buried just two days later.
In a statement, Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the attack as a heinous act and urged Nigerian authorities to launch a thorough investigation.
The organization noted that search and rescue efforts were ongoing, with bodies being recovered from the forest and the ruins of burned homes.
Amnesty International highlighted that the attack was a clear violation of international humanitarian law and amounted to a war crime due to its deliberate targeting of civilians.
Witnesses and local police confirmed that the militants, who arrived on motorcycles, launched their assault on the remote village late on Sunday.
Given the area’s isolation, detailed information about the attack only became available on Tuesday, as reported by police spokesperson Abdulkarim Dungus.
