A shooting incident at Nyankpala in the Tolon constituency of the Northern Region has left one person dead.
According to witnesses, the shooting stemmed from a dispute over alleged vote-buying.
The confrontation reportedly began between Alhaji Rashid Salifu, the Northern Regional Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Dr. Osman Tahiru Damba, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the area.
Eyewitnesses say the NDC candidate accused the NPP organizer of distributing money to voters, which sparked the heated argument. The situation escalated quickly, leading to gunfire and the fatal shooting.
Abubakari Fuseini Oluu, the NDC Communications Officer for the Tolon constituency, confirmed the incident, stating that one NDC supporter was killed and another seriously injured.
“We lost one person, and another is in critical condition,” he said in an interview with Radio Tamale.
This tragic event occurred during the ongoing 2024 general elections, which are being held across 276 constituencies in Ghana, with 18.8 million eligible voters.
The elections include 13 presidential candidates, four of whom are independent, as well as 801 parliamentary candidates competing for 276 seats. Of the parliamentary candidates, 111 are running as independents.
