Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, has officially declared his intention to run for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position in advance of the 2028 general elections.

The former Minister for Food and Agriculture shared his decision during a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana on Monday, June 24, 2025.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Dr. Acheampong explained that his bid was prompted by an exploratory team’s month-long assessment of NPP delegates’ sentiments. “A decision has been made that I will contest when the party opens nominations,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of informing the church leadership first, saying, “As a product of the church, it would be a disappointment, per my tradition, if the Moderator of the church heard it for the first time on the radio.”

Dr. Acheampong indicated that the feedback he received highlighted a desire for his leadership qualities and expertise, which he believes align with the party’s needs. “So, before a formal announcement is made, I thought it wise to come and inform the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church that this is what I have set out to do,” he added.

During the meeting, the leadership of the Presbyterian Church offered prayers and blessings for Dr. Acheampong as he embarks on his flagbearership campaign.
