Ellie Challis from Great Britain has fulfilled her dream by winning the gold medal in the women’s S3 50m backstroke final at the 2024 Paralympic Games.
Challis, the world champion, set a new personal best of 53.56 seconds, finishing almost five seconds ahead of second-placed Russian Zoia Shchurova.
Spain’s Marta Fernandez Infante took bronze.
“I’m so confident in myself. That was fun,” Challis said after her victory. She will now compete in the S3 100m freestyle heats on Tuesday.
Challis emphasized the unique nature of para sports, with athletes constantly moving in and out of classifications.
She expressed her immense joy and pride in achieving this gold medal.
