Heads of secondary schools demand immediate release of funds to avoid disruption to academic year.
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has urged the Ministry of Education to delay the reopening of Senior High Schools (SHSs) for the 2025 academic year unless outstanding funds are released promptly.
In a statement issued by CHASS’ National Secretary, Primus Baro, the association highlighted several previous communications—dated August 12, 2024, and September 20, 2024—along with assurances given by the Education Minister in a December 18, 2024, Zoom meeting, which have yet to be acted upon.
The group expressed concern over the government’s failure to settle arrears, including payments for perishable items, unpaid utility bills, and other critical expenses. According to CHASS, these financial shortfalls are preventing schools from preparing adequately for the new academic year, which is set to begin on January 3, 2025.
CHASS warned that without the necessary funds, school heads will face significant challenges in maintaining school facilities, providing quality education, and ensuring the safety and well-being of students.
The association has therefore called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to urgently prioritize the release of these funds to avoid any disruption and ensure a smooth reopening of schools.
