Ghana has recorded 4,155 suspected cholera cases since October 2024, with 35 deaths confirmed as of December 23. Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), revealed the figures in a statement on Tuesday, December 24.

The Western Region has been the hardest hit, accounting for 17 of the reported deaths. In response, a targeted Oral Vaccination Campaign was carried out from November 30 to December 19, 2024, in high-risk areas, including Awutu Senya East, Ahanta West, Effia-Kwesimintim, Sekondi-Takoradi, and Shama municipalities. A total of 662,906 individuals were vaccinated out of an eligible population of 792,482.

Dr. Aboagye highlighted a significant decline in cases following the vaccination campaign, noting that no confirmed cholera cases have been recorded in Awutu Senya East since the initiative.

He urged individuals with symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting to seek medical attention immediately. As the Christmas season approaches, he emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene by drinking clean water, consuming thoroughly cooked food, washing fruits and vegetables, and practicing regular handwashing, especially after using the toilet or handling surfaces.

“Taking these precautions will help prevent the further spread of cholera,” Dr. Aboagye added.
