Three individuals have tragically died in the Agona West Municipality following a cholera outbreak in Agona Swedru and surrounding towns in the Central Region.

Out of 200 suspected cases, 11 have been confirmed as cholera by the Swedru Municipal Government Hospital.

At a stakeholder meeting in Swedru, Mr. Simon Asare, the Agona West Municipal Coordinating Director, reported that the three deceased were among the confirmed cases.

The meeting was attended by chiefs, local Assembly members, political party representatives, market women, civil society organizations, media, and drivers’ unions.

The Agona West Municipal Assembly has taken swift action to contain the outbreak, including engaging water tankers to supply water to Agona Nkum and nearby villages after a break in the main pipeline from Agona Nyakrom.

The Assembly is also working with the Swedru office of the Ghana Water Company to expedite repairs to restore the water supply.

Mr. Asare, also the Acting Municipal Chief Executive, assured the public that the Assembly would work closely with health officials to eliminate the disease. He announced a three-month grace period for residents of Agona Nyakrom and Agona Nkum to install household toilets in a bid to improve sanitation. Those failing to comply would face strict penalties.

Additionally, a decongestion exercise is planned for Swedru’s Central Business District to improve traffic flow and ensure public safety. Mr. Asare urged all stakeholders to cooperate in making these initiatives a success.
