The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has commenced its planned strike on February 20, 2025, despite opposition from the Presidency.

The strike is in protest of the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchwey as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry, which CLOGSAG deems a political appointment.

CLOGSAG General Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo has called for the appointment to be revoked, citing a Supreme Court ruling that prohibits civil servants from engaging in active partisan politics.

He emphasized that Mr. Botchwey is a known activist of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a former District Chief Executive (DCE) under the late President John Evans Atta Mills’ administration.

“This is a Supreme Court ruling and it says take a step away from these services if you wish to broadcast your political affiliation,” stated Addo.

He reiterated that the ruling, not CLOGSAG’s opinion, is the basis for their protest. “This is the Supreme Court talking. It is not CLOGSAG speaking or Isaac Bampoe speaking. This is the Supreme Court.”
