A three-day demonstration by the Coalition of Concerned Citizens Against Galamsey has commenced in Accra, with protesters gathering at Okponglo this morning.

The protest aims to raise awareness about the destructive impact of illegal mining (galamsey) and urge the government to take stronger action against the practice.

Demonstrators are marching through the city, culminating at the Parliament House where they will submit a petition demanding the release of 53 individuals arrested during a previous demonstration against galamsey.

The protest is being held under the slogans “#FreeTheCitizens” and “#SayNoToGalamsey.”

While police are present to maintain order, some protesters are also designated to assist in ensuring a peaceful march.

According to Noble Amedowu, a lawyer representing the activists, the demonstration will continue for three days, with a night vigil planned on the final day to highlight the environmental damage caused by galamsey.
