The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has urged Ghanaians to stay calm and allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to fulfill its constitutional responsibility of officially announcing the results of the December 7 general elections.
In light of growing tensions and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) calls for greater transparency, CODEO made this plea during a preliminary post-election briefing on Sunday, December 8.
The organization emphasized the importance of respecting constitutional procedures and reassured the public about the credibility of the EC’s management of the election process.
CODEO’s findings, based on a representative sample of 1,500 polling stations across the country, confirmed that the election was conducted transparently.
The coalition noted that 99% of political party agents and all presiding officers had signed the parliamentary results declaration forms, further reinforcing confidence in the integrity of the process.
The coalition also commended the EC for its organization of the election, particularly the setup of polling stations and the ballot counting process, both of which were generally deemed credible.
CODEO reiterated that its Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) system would offer impartial verification of the EC’s official results once they are announced.
In its briefing, CODEO thanked all stakeholders involved in the election process, including the EC, security services, media, political parties, and the public, for ensuring a peaceful election.
The coalition also acknowledged the early concession by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, as an exemplary display of statesmanship.
“The PVT has already collected data from the 1,500 sampled polling stations nationwide, providing a reliable check on the final results. However, CODEO will release its PVT estimate only after the EC announces the official results,” the coalition stated, urging all Ghanaians to remain calm and uphold the nation’s democratic principles.
