A criminologist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Jones Opoku-Ware, is advocating for regulations to limit the amount of cash mobile money (MoMo) vendors can hold.

This call comes after a recent fatal attack on a MoMo vendor in the Ashanti Region, highlighting concerns about vendor safety.

Dr. Opoku-Ware argues that large sums of cash carried by MoMo vendors make them vulnerable to armed robbery.

He believes regulating the amount of money vendors can hold would significantly reduce the risk of attacks.

“Regulating the amount of money people can withdraw from a vendor would reduce the exposure of MoMo vendors to criminals,” Dr. Opoku-Ware explained.

“We need to ensure that vendors hold manageable amounts of cash, rather than large sums that attract criminals.”

Dr. Opoku-Ware urged mobile operators to take action, addressing the factors driving these crimes and streamlining MoMo vendor activities.

“If we don’t address these issues, we’ll continue to witness attacks,” he warned.
