English defender Eric Dier will leave Bayern Munich at the end of the current season after declining the opportunity to extend his stay at the Allianz Arena.
The 31-year-old joined the Bundesliga giants from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2024 on an initial six-month loan. His move was made permanent in the summer of 2024, and Dier has since made 45 appearances for the six-time Champions League winners.
Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, confirmed Dier’s impending departure, stating, “We had discussions with Eric about a new contract. He told us that he doesn’t want to extend and will leave us. He’s a great guy. We had a great time together. Hopefully he crowns his time with us with his first title.”
BBC Sport understands that Dier is in advanced negotiations to join French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco. The talks reportedly center around an initial three-year contract with an option for an additional year.
Dier’s time at Bayern could conclude with his first major career trophy, as the club is on the verge of securing the Bundesliga title and could clinch it with a victory against RB Leipzig this weekend.
Throughout his career, the 49-time capped England international has experienced cup final defeats, finishing as a runner-up with Tottenham in the 2015 and 2021 Carabao Cup finals, as well as the 2019 Champions League final. For football fans in Kumasi, who follow the careers of international players, Dier’s next move to Monaco will be a point of interest.
