Liverpool, UK – Colombian international Luis Díaz has officially completed a £65.5 million move to Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, declaring he has “fulfilled his duty” at Liverpool. The transfer brings an end to his three-and-a-half-year tenure at Anfield, where he signed a four-year deal with the German club.
The 28-year-old winger was notably absent from Liverpool’s pre-season match against AC Milan on Saturday amidst escalating speculation surrounding his future. After initially rejecting Bayern’s opening bid of £58.6 million earlier this month, Liverpool accepted a revised offer of £65.5 million over the weekend, granting Díaz permission for a medical examination with the German club.
Díaz departs the Reds as a Premier League champion, having amassed four major pieces of silverware during his time at the club. He expressed a sense of pride in his departure, noting it would have been the “perfect goodbye” were it not for the tragic passing of teammate Diogo Jota earlier this month.
In an emotional Instagram post, Díaz wrote: “I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together. I have met incredible people, fabulous colleagues, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans. Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart.”
He continued, “It’s good to be leaving with the feeling of a duty fulfilled, and, most of all, to be leaving a champion. It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of ours in such a tragic way. I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything.”
Díaz initially joined Liverpool from Porto for an initial £37 million in January 2022, going on to score 41 goals in 148 appearances. His trophy haul includes the FA Cup and EFL Cup in his inaugural season, and he was part of the squad that reached the 2022 Champions League final, losing to Real Madrid. Last season proved to be his most prolific, with 17 goals across all competitions as Liverpool clinched the Premier League title.
Díaz’s sale contributes to Liverpool’s significant player sales this summer, bringing in approximately £115 million. This has helped offset substantial spending of around £270 million on new acquisitions, including Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez. The Reds are also reportedly still keen on Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who was not part of the Magpies’ far-east tour and is said to be exploring options for an exit.
