The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for successfully overseeing peaceful and credible general elections in Ghana
. ECOWAS Chairman Bola Ahmed Tinubu praised President Akufo-Addo as a dedicated democrat who prioritizes his country’s well-being, emphasizing his commitment to maintaining democratic integrity and stability.
Speaking at the final ECOWAS meeting of 2024 in Abuja, Nigeria, Tinubu lauded Ghana’s election process as a sterling example of democratic principles. “I congratulate President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana for their successful election,” he said. “I urge all of us in the region to learn from this exemplary democratic practice and focus on national unity to ensure the political stability of the region.”
ECOWAS observers closely monitored Ghana’s 2024 elections, noting the smooth conduct of the electoral process, transparent voting procedures, and the absence of significant electoral violence. This has reinforced Ghana’s reputation as one of the most stable and democratic nations in West Africa.
Tinubu stressed the importance of such successful elections in fostering regional stability and inspiring other ECOWAS member states to aim for democratic excellence. The positive outcome of Ghana’s elections is expected to further regional cooperation and strengthen democratic institutions within the ECOWAS bloc.
Ghana’s ongoing commitment to democracy continues to serve as a model for neighboring countries looking to improve their electoral processes.
In the 2024 election, former President John Dramani Mahama emerged victorious, defeating Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Mahama secured 56% of the vote, while Bawumia garnered 41%.
Mahama’s win marks the end of eight years of NPP rule under President Akufo-Addo, whose final term was marred by significant economic challenges, including an IMF bailout and a debt default. Mahama will return to office on January 7, 2025.
