The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced new guidelines for media and observer access to collation centres during the 2024 general elections, aiming to ensure a secure and efficient process.
Under the updated rules, only eight media houses will be permitted at each constituency collation centre. At the regional collation centres, the number of media outlets will be capped at 12, which will include five TV stations and seven radio stations.
Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, Deputy Commissioner of the EC, explained the decision during an interview on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, November 26. He emphasized that these restrictions are designed to streamline the collation process and prevent potential challenges.
“Our decision is based on historical experience and the nature of the collation centres. If not properly managed, they can face a variety of issues. The commission believes this arrangement will ensure a smooth process at both the constituency and regional levels,” Dr. Asare said.
He further stated, “We are not just reducing the number of media houses; this approach is universal. For instance, in constituencies like Banda, Hohoe, or Bantama, eight media outlets should be sufficient to convey the necessary information.”
