The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has reaffirmed that it does not have the authority to determine or appoint the country’s president.
During a live broadcast of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa emphasized that the Commission’s primary role is to declare the choices made by voters, not to influence the election outcome.
Mensa assured attendees that the EC will maintain this impartiality in the upcoming 2024 general elections, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to neutrality and fairness.
She urged political parties to avoid spreading misinformation regarding the EC’s responsibilities, reminding them of the Commission’s limited authority in the electoral process.
“I want to reference Dr. Hassan Ayariga’s statement that the EC can never make anyone a president, which is something we all understand. We should refrain from spreading misinformation,” she said.
“The role of the EC is simply to declare the choice of the voters. It is the Ghanaian voter who elects the president, and the EC merely announces that decision. This will remain true in December 2024, as we will declare who the voters want as their president.”
