The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the final certified voter register in advance of the general elections set for December 7, 2024.
The EC confirms that a total of 18,774,159 voters are eligible to participate in the upcoming elections. This total encompasses three primary categories:
- Biometrically Registered Voters: 18,640,811 individuals who have provided biometric data and will undergo verification on election day.
- Special Voters: 131,478 people, including members of security agencies, media personnel, and EC staff, who will vote early due to their duties on election day.
- Voters Without Biometric Data: 1,870 voters whose biometric data was compromised, requiring them to be manually verified on election day.
In its announcement, the EC explained that some polling stations have been administratively closed due to logistical considerations.
Certain stations did not meet the minimum voter threshold, while others were closed at the request of local communities.
Voters from these closed stations have been reassigned to nearby polling locations to ensure they can still participate in the election.
The EC noted that because no register was generated for the closed polling stations, an absent voters list was not created, resulting in 884 voters being excluded.
However, their records and movement details are securely stored in the Voter Management System to maintain accountability.
