The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has firmly stated that politicians involved in illegal mining (“galamsey”) will face the full force of the law, just like any other citizen found violating environmental regulations.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, Prof. Nana Ama Klutse, speaking on Channel One Newsroom, emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to protecting the environment, regardless of an individual’s status or political affiliation. “We need to protect the environment no matter who is involved… So for us, we are focused on our mandate,” she declared.

Prof. Klutse explained that while the EPA actively monitors environmental activities, it also investigates complaints from communities and companies regarding illegal mining.

She assured the public that any such reports would be taken seriously and those found responsible would be held accountable.

“If any politician is involved in illegal mining, and we get hold of the person, we will still apply the law as we would to any other Ghanaian,” Prof. Klutse asserted, reiterating the EPA’s commitment to fairness and accountability in tackling the persistent environmental threats posed by galamsey.
