Equatorial Guinea has qualified for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations without playing, following Togo’s defeat in their penultimate Group E qualifier on Wednesday.
The Sparrowhawks needed a victory against already-eliminated Liberia to keep their hopes alive for a spot in the finals in Morocco.
However, the Lone Stars won 1-0 in Monrovia, with Mohammed Sangare scoring the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute.
As a result, Togo will miss the Nations Cup for the fourth consecutive time, having last participated in the 2017 tournament in Gabon.
Equatorial Guinea is guaranteed a top-two finish in Group E, irrespective of the results in their final two matches against already-qualified Algeria at home on Thursday (13:00 GMT) and away in Togo on Sunday.
The National Thunder had reached the last 16 of the 2023 Nations Cup in Ivory Coast earlier this year.
With this qualification, Equatorial Guinea becomes the ninth team to secure a place in Morocco, joining Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, DR Congo, Egypt, and Senegal in the fourth round of qualifying.
