The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Eastern Region has safely disposed of approximately 2.5 tons of unwholesome products in a public health initiative.
The destruction, carried out with the agreement of product owners and under careful supervision, included confiscated drugs, cosmetics, canned foods, beverages, and medical equipment seized from various outlets across the region, such as information centers, supermarkets, and pharmacies.
The disposal took place at the Akwadum landfill near Koforidua, with tight security and expert oversight to ensure public safety and environmental protection.
Anita Owusu-Kuffour, the FDA’s Eastern Regional Head, emphasized the Authority’s commitment to ensuring the safety of regulated products. She urged manufacturers and vendors to report unsafe or expired goods for proper disposal, alongside the FDA’s own market monitoring efforts.
She explained the FDA’s procedures for safe disposal at the landfill, involving specialized equipment to prevent scavenging. Owusu-Kuffour also reiterated the FDA’s wider role in safeguarding public health by regulating a range of products, from medicines to food and cosmetics.
This operation highlights the FDA’s ongoing efforts to remove harmful goods from the market and protect consumers nationwide.
