Dr. John Kingsley Krugu, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has stressed that only the state holds the authority and responsibility to bring lasting peace to the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.

Dr. Krugu highlighted widespread dissatisfaction among residents of the Bawku enclave over the government’s failure to effectively resolve the conflict, which has led to repeated violence and unrest.

Dr. Krugu emphasized the crucial role of the state in asserting authority and enforcing the law. He argued that decisive action is required to address the issue.

“When the state recognizes a traditional leader and declares someone else’s claims to the title illegal, the state must step in,” Dr. Krugu stated. “If I were found to be in an illegal position, the state machinery would take action against me. It’s the state’s responsibility to ensure the law is upheld.”

The Bawku conflict, rooted in a long-standing chieftaincy dispute, has caused significant instability in the Upper East Region.
