The French Ambassador to Ghana, Jules Armand Animbossou, has urged Ghanaians to prioritize the preservation of democratic values as the country approaches the December 7, 2024, general elections.
He emphasized that this commitment is essential for maintaining the country’s constitutional order.
Speaking at the Annual Cocktail event for the French business community and the launch of the France-Ghana Economic Report 2023-2024 in Accra, Ambassador Animbossou expressed his hope for a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process in Ghana. “Ghana is recognized as a beacon of democracy in the region and beyond, and it is crucial that it continues to uphold democratic values and respect for constitutional order. I wish for fair and transparent elections in Ghana,” he stated.
In a related context, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards any attempts to undermine Ghana’s democracy ahead of the upcoming elections. During his address at the National Best Farmer Awards, he emphasized his strong commitment to ensuring peace and security during this critical electoral period.
President Akufo-Addo underscored the importance of Ghana’s democratic values and highlighted the integrity of the electoral process as a top priority. He reminded attendees of the sacrifices made to build a stable democracy that serves as a model for others in Africa and beyond. He acknowledged the contributions of previous leaders, civil society, and the Ghanaian people in fostering a peaceful political environment, stating that it is now the responsibility of all Ghanaians to safeguard this legacy.
The president urged citizens, political leaders, and their supporters to prioritize unity and peace, stressing that Ghana’s democratic principles must be protected from any threats. “As we approach the 2024 general elections, let me be clear: I am committed to free, fair, and transparent elections. Ghana’s democracy is a treasure we have all fought to build, and it is a legacy that must be preserved.
“The sovereign will of the Ghanaian people will be upheld, and any attempts to disrupt peace or undermine the democratic process will be met with the full force of the law. Let there be no doubt: our democracy will remain strong, and the people’s choice will prevail.”
