WhatsApp to End Support for 18 Android Models and 3 iPhone Models in 2025

WhatsApp will no longer work on certain older smartphones starting in 2025, with both Android and iPhone users affected by the upcoming changes.

The first major compatibility update will take place on January 1, 2025, when WhatsApp will stop supporting Android devices running KitKat OS (version 4.4) and older. While some users may still be able to run WhatsApp if they can update their devices to a more recent operating system, many older phone models will not be able to receive these updates due to manufacturers ceasing support for these devices.

If you’re holding onto an older phone, it might be time to check whether your device will still be able to use WhatsApp in the new year. Here’s a look at the Android and iPhone models that will be affected:

Android Phones No Longer Supported (from January 2025):

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

These models will no longer be able to run WhatsApp once the update takes effect. While some devices may still be usable if they can be manually updated, this often involves technical challenges that could void warranties or render the device inoperable.

iPhone Models No Longer Supported (from May 5, 2025):

In addition to the Android devices, iPhone users will also face compatibility issues in 2025. Starting May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1.

Affected iPhone models include:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

These models can currently use WhatsApp if they are updated to the latest iOS version (iOS 12.5.7), but from May 2025, users of these phones will no longer be able to access the app unless they upgrade to a newer device that supports iOS 15.1 or later.

Why Is This Happening?

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, says these changes are part of regular updates designed to ensure the app remains secure, functional, and compatible with newer smartphones. As technology advances, older operating systems can struggle to support the latest features and security measures required for a safe and efficient messaging experience.

These updates will impact both the regular WhatsApp application and WhatsApp Business, which share the same system requirements.

If your phone is on the list and you’re not ready to give it up yet, you may want to consider upgrading to a newer model to continue using WhatsApp in 2025 and beyond.
