Manhyia North MP, Akwasi Konadu, has clarified the Minority’s position on Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which aims to revoke permissions for mining in forest reserves.
This clarification comes after the NPP Minority called for the LI to undergo a pre-laying process before being formally introduced in Parliament.
LI 2462, officially known as the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations 2022, currently allows mining in forest reserves if deemed to be in the national interest.
Konadu stressed that the Minority is not opposed to revoking the regulation but insists that parliamentary procedures should be properly followed.
“The Minority is not against the LI, nor the revocation of portions of the LI that grant individuals the right to mine in forest reserves. What the Minority is advocating for is that the processes for passing an LI should be strictly adhered to,” he explained.
The proposed LI has sparked a debate in Parliament, with the Majority pushing for its swift passage, while the Minority emphasizes the need for procedural transparency and accountability.
