Ghana has initiated the immediate evacuation of its citizens from Iran and closed its embassy in Tehran due to the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran.

The decision, announced by Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa in a Facebook post on Monday, June 16, 2025, underscores the Mahama administration’s commitment to safeguarding Ghanaian lives.

“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Minister Ablakwa stated.

As part of the evacuation efforts, all Ghanaian diplomats, students, professionals, and other nationals are being relocated via land borders.

The Minister also indicated that Ghana is closely monitoring the situation in Israel. “We are equally keenly following developments in Israel and will advise shortly,” he added. In the interim, embassy operations in Tel Aviv have been reduced to a bare minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel have been urged to maintain close communication with the consular department.

Mr. Ablakwa assured the public that the government is fully committed to the safety of its citizens, stating, “no effort will be spared in protecting Ghanaian lives and keeping all Ghanaians out of harm’s way.” He concluded by reiterating Ghana’s call for de-escalation, urging both parties to “pursue diplomatic options and end hostilities.”
