A major disruption is looming in Ghana as the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has announced a nationwide strike set to begin on October 10, 2024.
The decision comes in response to the government’s inaction on illegal mining activities in forest reserves and near water bodies.
The TUC has issued a stern ultimatum, demanding that the government:
- Cease all mining operations in forest reserves across the country.
- Evacuate all mining equipment from affected areas.
- Deploy security forces to remove or destroy any equipment found near river bodies or within forest reserves.
The strike follows widespread public outrage sparked by recent investigative reports highlighting the severe pollution of Ghana’s rivers due to illegal mining.
Despite a week-long grace period, the government has failed to address the TUC’s demands.
Joshua Ansah, the Secretary General of the TUC, has emphasized the union’s unwavering commitment to the strike, stating that workers will withdraw their services starting October 10.
