The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has dispatched 300 personnel to the Effutu area in the Central Region to begin a cholera vaccination campaign.

Additionally, 108 personnel in the Agona Swedru area have been trained and have started administering vaccines, according to GHS.

Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director General of the GHS, emphasized that the vaccination is aimed at curbing the spread of cholera, but also stressed the importance of cleanliness in preventing the disease. “It’s not just about distributing vaccines; we’re also focusing on health promotion so people understand that prevention is better than cure,” he said.

To support these efforts, Central Regional Minister Ekow Panyi Okyere Eduamoah announced the launch of monthly clean-up exercises starting on March 1, 2025. The exercise will be compulsory, with the regional government urging local assemblies to enforce by-laws and penalize those who fail to comply.

“We want to change our behavior. The last Saturday of every month, starting this month, we will hold two clean-up exercises, and we expect institutions to participate. We will ensure the district and municipal assemblies implement their by-laws, and we will provide the necessary education to ensure that our communities stay clean,” Eduamoah added.
