Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued an ultimatum to authorities, demanding an update on the investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale by the end of March 2025.
Six years after Suale’s tragic murder, no arrests have been made, raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of the police investigation.
GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour expressed deep disappointment over the lack of progress in the case during a press conference in Accra. “If we do not receive a satisfactory response by the deadline,” Dwumfour stated, “we will escalate the matter to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice.”
This strong stance comes amidst growing frustration over the handling of the investigation. In February 2024, former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame shockingly revealed that his office had not received any prosecutable evidence from the police regarding Suale’s murder.
Recently, MP Kwame Asare-Obeng (A-Plus) claimed to have provided the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) with information about suspected killers. He warned that he would be forced to publicly disclose the name of the suspect if the police fail to act on the information.
The GJA’s demand for an update and its threat to escalate the matter to the ECOWAS Court underscore the urgency and seriousness of this case.
The continued lack of justice for Ahmed Suale undermines press freedom and the safety of journalists in Ghana.
