The Board Chairman of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a stern warning to staff, threatening dismissal for anyone who participates in the nationwide strike called by Organized Labor.
Speaking at a staff event on Wednesday, October 9, Isaac Amoo emphasized the critical role of GMet in providing weather data for sectors like aviation, agriculture, and emergency services.
He argued that the agency’s operations are essential for national security and cannot be disrupted by a strike.
The nationwide strike is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 10, in protest of the government’s inaction against illegal mining, or “galamsey.” Organized Labor and its allied unions are calling for a state of emergency and immediate measures to halt the environmental destruction caused by galamsey.
Despite the broader concerns raised by the strike, Amoo insisted that GMet staff must prioritize their duties and avoid participating.
He stated that any employee who absents themselves from work due to the strike will be considered terminated.
