The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that the government has cleared all outstanding Capitation Grant arrears owed to public basic schools from 2023 to date.
In a statement released on Wednesday, July 23, the GES described the payment as a demonstration of the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening basic education across the country.
Key Role of the Capitation Grant
The Capitation Grant is a critical funding mechanism for basic schools, enabling them to cover costs such as:
- Purchase of teaching and learning materials
- Minor infrastructure repairs
- Day-to-day administrative and management activities
By providing schools with operational funds directly, the grant also promotes greater school-level autonomy and improved delivery of education services.
Responsible Use and Increased Oversight
While commending school heads for their patience and dedication during the delay in payments, the GES urged all institutions to use the funds responsibly and strictly in line with approved financial guidelines.
To ensure transparency and accountability, the GES announced that district and regional monitoring teams will intensify oversight and conduct regular inspections to verify the proper use of the funds.
A Renewed Focus on Educational Quality
The GES reaffirmed its commitment to delivering equitable, inclusive, and quality education for every child in Ghana and emphasized the importance of efficient fund management in achieving this goal.
