The Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, has announced that the government has fully paid GH¢809 million to the contractor handling the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway project as of August 4, 2025.

This confirmation follows the contractor’s return to the site to resume work on the key road, offering relief to commuters who have endured severe traffic congestion in recent weeks.

The payment comes just ahead of a looming deadline set by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which had issued a one-week ultimatum to the government, threatening to suspend operations by Wednesday, August 20, if work did not resume.

In an interview on Monday, August 18, Mr. Agyei explained the timeline of the disbursements:
“On July 24, we gave part payment; on July 30, another tranche; and on August 4, the final payment. Altogether, we’ve honoured the contractor’s request in full—about GH¢809 million,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Amasaman MP Sedem Afenyo welcomed the resumption of work, expressing hope that the project would now proceed without further delays.

“Some weeks back, we met with the project engineer and MCEs from the affected areas and were assured that steps would be taken. With these payments confirmed, I’m optimistic that construction won’t stall again,” he told said.
