The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has initiated an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on February 19, 2025.

The incident unfolded during a Customs Division operation aimed at intercepting a suspected smuggled Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan entering Ghana from Togo. GRA officials stated that officers received intelligence regarding the vehicle’s illegal entry and attempted to apprehend the occupants.

The suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, prompting officers to fire warning shots. Tragically, a stray bullet struck a bystander located a few meters from the checkpoint.

The injured individual was promptly taken to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment and responding well.

The GRA has committed to conducting a comprehensive investigation to determine the precise circumstances of the shooting.

They have also reiterated their commitment to ensuring public safety while fulfilling their mandate of protecting national revenue.

“We sympathize with persons affected by the unfortunate incident which occurred in the course of protection of revenue at the country’s borders and remain committed to our mission of ensuring the safety and security of all stakeholders,” the GRA stated.
