Liverpool manager Arne Slot has hailed Pep Guardiola’s contract extension at Manchester City as “good news” for the Premier League.
Guardiola, who has been at the helm of Manchester City since 2016, recently signed a two-year extension that will keep him at the club until 2027. During his tenure, City has won six Premier League titles, including two narrow triumphs over Liverpool, with both teams emerging as fierce rivals in recent years.
Liverpool secured the league title in 2020, further intensifying the rivalry. Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp this summer, has led Liverpool to the top of the Premier League, with his side five points clear of second-place City after 11 games.
Discussing Guardiola’s new contract, Slot said, “It’s great news for both City and the league. The Premier League needs the best managers and players, and Guardiola is definitely one of the best, if not the best, in the league.”
He added, “Winning four titles in a row is a clear indication of his quality as a manager. Even though City has an abundance of top players, if Guardiola had decided to leave, I don’t think they would have fallen to the bottom of the table next season.”
Slot, speaking ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming match against Southampton on Sunday, also described Guardiola as “one of the best managers football has ever seen.”
Guardiola, who has previously managed Barcelona and Bayern Munich, has won 18 trophies at Manchester City, including the Champions League in 2023.
