One person was shot, and several others sustained minor injuries during a mini-rally in Agona Swedru when gunfire erupted through a crowd.
According to reports, supporters of Chris Arthur, a parliamentary candidate, were returning from a campaign launch in Otinkorang, located in the Agona West area. As they made their way back, they encountered supporters of incumbent MP Cynthia Morrison at Agona Nyankrom, who were also campaigning.
During their passage through the crowd, a gun was fired, injuring Haruna Rashid, Chris Arthur’s campaign team manager, who suffered gunshot wounds to the ribs.
NPP Agona West constituency chairman Jibril Tanko reported that Chris Arthur’s team was attacked by Cynthia Morrison’s supporters without provocation as they tried to navigate through the crowd.
“It’s unfortunate that we were attacked after our campaign tour at Otinkorang. Our MP, Cynthia Morrison, was also launching her campaign at Agona Nyankrom, and we needed to pass through the crowd. The atmosphere was tense, and her supporters began to assault us,” Tanko said. “I warned my candidate that it might be too risky to go through, but the situation escalated quickly. A gun was fired, hitting Haruna Rashid, who has been rushed to Accra for medical treatment.”
The chairman confirmed that the incident has been reported to the police for investigation, urging them to identify and prosecute the shooter.
“We are taken aback by the behavior of Cynthia Morrison’s campaign team and have filed an official complaint with the police. We expect them to apprehend the culprit. Nevertheless, we will continue to support Chris in his parliamentary campaign,” he added.
Several other supporters were also injured in the chaos and were taken to Agona Swedru Government Hospital for treatment.
