A gun attack on a bus travelling from Bolgatanga to Bawku on Monday, January 6, 2025, has left one dead and several others injured. The bus, which was under a security escort, was ambushed by armed assailants as it passed through the region.
Nuaima Awudu, a young trader from Bawku, was tragically killed in the attack. She had been in Bolgatanga for business purposes. Several other passengers, primarily women, sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital.
The assault comes on the heels of another violent incident the previous day, Sunday, January 5, in which a resident of Bawku was killed while attempting to relocate within the town. These attacks have disrupted the fragile peace that had recently returned to the area after months of tension and violence.
The ongoing violence has created an atmosphere of fear among Bawku’s residents, with many opting to stay within their local communities to avoid becoming targets. The risks of travelling beyond these boundaries have grown significantly, as individuals are increasingly vulnerable to such attacks.
Despite the implementation of a dawn-to-dusk curfew in November 2024 to restore order, the security situation remains unstable. Authorities have yet to identify the attackers or provide any updates on measures to prevent further violence.
The persistent unrest in Bawku raises significant concerns about the effectiveness of current security measures and the urgent need for a more comprehensive strategy to ensure the safety of both residents and travellers in the region.
