Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has criticized Pep Guardiola for backing a potential player strike over the congested football calendar.

Earlier this month, Manchester City midfielder Rodri suggested that elite players could refuse to play if football authorities don’t reduce the number of matches.

Guardiola supported Rodri’s comments, arguing that drastic measures are needed to address the issue.

However, Hasselbaink believes a strike would be detrimental to the sport and alienate fans. The former Chelsea striker told Genting Casino: “I don’t agree with Pep Guardiola on this. When we were young, we wanted to play as many games as possible.”

Hasselbaink added that while there are too many games, particularly due to the expansion of the Champions League, a strike is not the solution. He emphasized that the demand for football is high, and players should not threaten to go on strike.

The former Dutch international concluded by saying, “Footballers shouldn’t be saying things like what Rodri said.”
