The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the upcoming 2024 elections, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as “Napo”, has apologised for his recent remarks comparing President Nana Akufo-Addo to previous Ghanaian leaders.

On Tuesday (9 July), Dr Opoku Prempeh asserted that President Akufo-Addo is the best president Ghana has had since independence, causing public scrutiny.

However, in a statement dated 12 July 2024, Dr Opoku Prempeh clarified that he did not intend to denigrate former President Kwame Nkrumah or any other leader.

“The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other presidents we have had,” he said.

“I wish to emphasise that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, John Agyekum Kufuor,” he said.

“I note the concerns raised after my statement. I apologise sincerely and regret any discomfort caused,” he added.
