Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Presidential Aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general election, has begun his campaign tour in Kumasi, vowing to restore the noble foundations of the party built on service, sacrifice, and selflessness.
Speaking in radio and TV interviews as part of the tour, Ing. Agyepong warned that the creeping culture of “moneycracy” and internal disunity is eroding the party’s strength and creating apathy among grassroots supporters.
“It is sad to serve the party and get ignored when your tenure is over” he said, adding that the resulting apathy was a key reason many refused to vote in the 2024 elections.
The former General Secretary aligned with Prof. Mike Oquaye’s view that the delegate system is broken and must be fixed. He emphasized his views that all former party officers from polling station executives who have served since 1992 and are still alive deserve to be granted voting rights.
“If we expand participation, the moneycracy in politics will be broken,” he emphasized.
Ing. Agyepong, who has served the party from its inception under the late Prof. Adu Boahen and draws inspiration from party stalwarts such as B.J. Da Rocha, R.R Amponsah, JH Mensah and Kwame Pianim among others, underscored that unity remains the party’s greatest weapon.
“When the NPP goes for primaries and elects a presidential candidate, instead of uniting behind him, we often do the opposite. But if the NPP is united, we are more stronger than the NDC,” he stated.
Recalling his early service, he narrated how in 1992, at just 30 years old working in the public service at Ghana Highway Authcivil servant, he boldly stepped forward to broadcast the NPP’s message when no one else was available.
He also cited former President John Agyekum Kufuor as a model of inclusive leadership, noting that despite not being in his camp during the Kufuor-Akufo-Addo contest, Kufuor still appointed him.
Ing. Agyepong declared that his mission is to unite the NPP and bring back the spirit of volunteerism, dedication, and collaboration.
“Politics is about public service, not individual interest. Some people have forgotten that,” he said.
As he begins his Kumasi campaign tour, Mr. Agyepong is urging the youth and grassroots members to reconnect with the values that once made the NPP strong, as he seeks the party’s flagbearership ahead of the 2028 general elections.
