National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has rejected claims that Ghana’s judiciary is under political attack, insisting that current developments are part of broader efforts to reform and strengthen state institutions

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah dismissed allegations that the government is targeting suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, clarifying that the executive branch has not taken any direct action to remove her.

“The executive has done nothing about the removal of the Chief Justice,” he stated. “If anything, the executive is simply fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities.”

His comments come amid growing public concern over a perceived rift between the judiciary and the executive. Some critics have accused the government of undermining judicial independence, but the NDC Chairman firmly pushed back.

“The judiciary is not under attack,” he said. “What we’re seeing is a reform of state institutions. If the judiciary has shortcomings, it must be reformed to fulfill its constitutional mandate.”

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah stressed that institutional reform is key to a healthy democracy, arguing that all arms of government must operate effectively and within the boundaries of the Constitution.

“Reform should not be viewed as interference,” he added. “It’s about renewal and making sure institutions are fit for purpose.”
