Following renewed violence in Bawku that has resulted in multiple casualties and property damage, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong has issued a passionate plea for peace and national unity.

In a statement released on Sunday, April 13, Agyapong expressed deep concern over the recent clashes involving security forces and local youth, which reportedly led to the death of several individuals and the burning of the residence of Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga.

Describing the situation as “deeply troubling,” he emphasized the need for restraint, especially among the youth.

“No grievance, however legitimate, should result in violence or the destruction of our communities,” Agyapong said. “Peaceful coexistence is essential to the development and progress of our nation.”

He acknowledged the longstanding ethnic tensions fueling the unrest and called on all parties involved to prioritize dialogue over conflict.

Agyapong also applauded the reactivation of a peace mediation process spearheaded by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. The initiative, originally introduced by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has now been endorsed by President John Dramani Mahama.

“This is a commendable act of leadership that transcends political lines and puts Ghana first,” he stated.

He encouraged all stakeholders to fully support the Otumfuo-led mediation efforts, adding that peace in Bawku is critical to national stability.

“When Bawku is at peace, Ghana is at peace. We cannot build a prosperous nation while any region remains in conflict,” Agyapong stressed.

The statement closed with a strong call for collective responsibility, urging both leaders and citizens to contribute actively to efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace in the troubled region.
