Kennedy Agyapong, a 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate aspirant, has announced his withdrawal from the party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing significant security concerns for his supporters.
This decision follows a violent incident in Kumasi, where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed during a gathering organized by Agyapong’s team.
The injured student, a member of Unity Hall’s Jama group, had been contracted to perform at an event held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama. According to sources close to Agyapong, a wealthy associate of the former Member of Parliament, who was present at the event, provided funds to the Jama group.
Shortly after, a group of heavily built men, allegedly affiliated with the NPP, forcibly seized the money, leading to a confrontation between the Jama group and the armed individuals. Gunshots were reportedly discharged during the altercation, resulting in the stabbing of the KNUST student.
The injured student was promptly taken to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Agyapong’s team has officially filed a complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command regarding the incident.
In a statement to the media on Wednesday, Agyapong confirmed his withdrawal from the tour and expressed his determination to seek justice for the victim. “Because of what happened yesterday, my team and I want to pull out because lives are threatened. I don’t think I can protect my team enough. So we want out so that Dr. Bawumia can do his campaign,” he stated.
